WAHMs, Create Your Opportunity (Part 1)

30 Jun, 2009  |  Written by  |  under How To, Work from Home

Anytime I browse around mom-focused online communities I’ve noticed there is ALWAYS a discussion regarding home business “opportunities”.   Why is that?  One big reason is many moms want to contribute financially to their household, regardless of their financial situation.   Making money from home allows you to make money and still have the flexibility to care for your children.  I think we also secretly hope and pray that we will find an opportunity that is effortless, exciting, fulfilling and in the process makes us wealthy.  If we are going to take money from our family’s budget for an opportunity to make money opportunitydoing work we love, we want to use a tried and true method because it eliminates the risk we feel we have to take.

I’ve got an idea.  Come in closely now and listen to what I’m going to say very carefully. Why don’t you stop looking for a home business opportunity and create your own?

Don’t get me wrong.  There are legitimate opportunities out there.  Every opportunity is not a scam or a get rich quick scheme.   Sometimes out of our desperation to find something to make money we abandon common sense and sound wisdom.  Let’s be honest, the reason so many people are scammed is because they want a short-cut to success.  There ain’t no such a thang. In my experience the requirements for success have not changed.  Sweat equity, stick-to-it-ness, an I’m-in-this-for-the-long-haul mentality and a willingness to tell anyone who will listen about what you do, always have been and always will be the basics.  These four requirements are also known as hard work, perseverance, commitment and passion.

Come back tomorrow and we will discuss how to begin this process of creating your home business idea.

I think this post is awesome. One thing I could add is that it isn’t just moms that get taken in by the “make money fast” lure. No matter what “they” say, there is always a cost hidden somewhere and people that are desperate fail to think about that no matter how level-headed they are in other areas of their lives.
Your reminder of the four basic requirements was great. It is a theme our parents, grandparents, and on back, adhered to and it served them well.

    Great post, Kendra!

This is especially a good reminder given the current economic conditions. It is easy to get scammed when we truly want to believe there’s an easy way to get out of tough financial times.

But I love your take on it–”Don’t go looking for opportunity; create your own!” Sometimes people just need to be reminded of all the skills, talents, experience and know-how they already have that can be applied to some problem that is waiting to be solved.

I am sick and tired of commuting 5 hours a day, spending half my income on commuting to get to a job I hate and deal with co-workers that are racist against gender and to top it off not earning enough to pay my bills some say they barely make ends meet well I can top that.I am praying for a way to make some serious income and spend more quality time with my children who is graduating next year and hopefully going away to college and I want to know I can afford their tuition fees and everything.

Mary, I agree. Moms are absolutely not the only ones taken in. We ALL have to be cautious. It is definitely true that our predecessors truly lived by those 4 basic principles. They are timeless and there is no way around them. Thanks for your feedback!
